Amidst the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, Europe has witnessed a concerning surge in domestic and intra-family violence, increased restrictions on access to contraception and abortion rights, an under-recognition of care professions, a persistent lack of female representation in decision-making bodies, and a rise in mental health issues among women. These successive lockdowns and the overarching health crisis have cast a harsh spotlight on the plight of women’s rights in Europe. In this essay, Amandine Clavaud delves into the profound setbacks experienced, particularly in the more conservative Member States of the European Union. Through a comprehensive analysis of the response, or lack thereof, from public authorities, she underscores the urgent need for comprehensive gender integration in crisis management.
