Giulia URSO
Giulia Urso is a tenured Assistant Professor in Economic-Political Geography at the Gran Sasso Science Institute (GSSI), L’Aquila. She is a member of the A.Ge.I. (Association of Italian Geographers) working groups Territorial Identity and Placetelling. Since 2015, within the framework of a memorandum of understanding between the Technical Committee for Inner Areas (CTAI) and GSSI, she has been carrying out a series of study and analysis activities aimed at assisting CTAI’s activity within the framework of the National Strategy for Inner Areas (SNAI) with the ultimate goal of accompanying the decision-making process for the definition of development strategies for the areas involved. Since June 2020 she is a member of the board of directors of the scientific association Riabitare l’Italia. She was recently involved in some funded research projects with a focus on inner areas – The migration, environment and climate change nexus: Exploring migrants’ contribution in addressing climate change challenges in Italy’s mountain areas, funded by IOM Italy (International Organization for Migrations) (October 2021 to April 2022); and Giovani dentro. Vivere e lavorare nell’Italia del margine, funded by Fondazione Vismara and CoopFond and co-financed by GSSI, CREA, EURAC, CPS, University of Turin, University of Salerno and Osservatorio Giovani (October 2020 to July 2021). She is the coordinator for the GSSI of the joint project GSSI-IMT Borghi, paesi, aree interne: infrastrutture, sostenibilità e qualità della vita, funded through the PRO3 programme (January 2022 to December 2023). Her main research interests revolve around the challenges, resilience and development of peripheral or depopulating areas.
