To mark the European Day of Solidarity between Generations, the Young European Socialists (YES) and the European Seniors Organisation (ESO), together with the Party of European Socialists (PES) and FEPS, are organising an event to bring together young and old activists and policymakers to reflect on how civic education can empower people to exercise their right to participate.

This event comes after two successful editions in 2020 and 2021, that tackled the fight against climate change and the challenges and opportunities of the health and care sectors, respectively.

POLICY BRIEF
Labour and the past, present and future of Work

By Andrew Pakes, Frederick Harry Pitts

Most of us spend most of our time at work. Work is what we do, where we go, who we know and how we get on in life. But while they might have a lot to say about salaries or employment figures, our politicians have less to offer when it comes to work itself.

Left and right agree we need more ‘good jobs’ – but do we know what good jobs are?. Read the Policy Brief
PROGRESSIVE PAGE
by Jean-Marc Ayrault

The invasion of Ukraine by Russia is a real tragedy that will permanently upset international relations and brutally call into question many of our approaches.

But let’s be clear: President Vladimir Putin’s brutality comes from afar. And for a possible future solution to the conflict, the EU must be around the table.

EUROPEAN PROGRESSIVE OBSERVATORY

If you thought Hungarian politics could not surprise any more, you would have to think again. Despite an abysmal management of the coronavirus crisis, the experience of runaway inflation, and teachers organising nationwide strikes due to poor salaries and working conditions, Viktor Orbán managed to increase the vote share of his party and retain a constitutional majority in parliament.

Outside the capital city Budapest, the one-party state is practically complete, and after four years of right-wing assaults against institutions of culture and higher education, Orbán is now expected to turn his guns on local governments where the democratic opposition still holds positions.

On Sunday, 26 March, national elections took place in Malta. With six parties competing for the 67 seats of the House of Representatives, it was the incumbent Labour Party that emerged as a strong winner, with 55,11 per cent of the votes cast in their favour.

These votes translated into a clear majority of 38 Members of the Parliament. The turnout was 85,3 per cent.

Just before the European Commission’s new proposals on Circular Economy, FEPS Policy Analyst on Climate and Environment Andreas Dimmelmeier wrote an op-ed on the topic.

“The basic intuition is fairly simple. It aims to replace the linear economic system (i.e. ‘take, make, waste’) with a closed and self-regenerating system. Therefore, the circular economy no longer takes disproportionate amounts from ecological systems while imposing waste and pollution on them. How to create a circular economy is, however, a much more complex question.

The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism in the EU and the World

🎙️ MEP Mohammed Chahim, Vice President of the S&D group and rapporteur for the proposed European Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) regulation, gives a broad overview of the rationale, functioning and political debates around the proposal of a CBAM.
