28 November – Prague, Czech Republic

EU Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights, Nicolas Schmit, will be one of the speakers of this new edition of Call to Europe that will take place in Prague, organised by FEPS, Masarykova Demokratická Akademie, and Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung.

It will bring together policymakers, academic experts, and activists to discuss not only the current crisis of living costs and the state of play for Social Europe, but also how European social and economic policy should be shaped so that all Europeans can have a decent quality of life.

Prior to the public conference, FEPS member foundations are invited to join a discussion on social democracy in central and Eastern Europe, followed by a closed-door roundtable on the energy crisis.
29 November – Ljubljana, Slovenia

FEPS together with ThinkYoung and Društvo Progresiva present the report ‘Builders of Progress: Europe’s NextGen‘ in Ljubljana. The report reveals the political views of Millennials and Generation Z in 11 European countries. It is based on the most comprehensive survey on the subject, collecting 19,000 responses from young Europeans aged 16-38.

During the event, we will explore the many topics covered in the report, as well as an accompanying factsheet summarising the study’s key findings on Slovenia.
15 December – Rome, Italy

At this public seminar, we will present to the Italian public the first results of the ‘Recovery Watch‘ research project. Its objective is to understand how the recovery and resilience plans will shape the transformation of our society.

The results of the policy studies will be discussed with high-level speakers such as Fabrizio Barca, former Minister and Co-coordinator of Forum Disuguaglianze e Diversità, national and local policymakers, civil society organizations and experts.

We will present three sub-focuses linked to three policy contributions of the project:
1) Care policies and their gender dimension;
2) Childcare policies;
3) Climate measures impact on employment, particularly in the energy and automotive sectors.

This event is organised by FEPS, FES and Institut Emile Vandervelde, with the support of Forum Disuguaglianze e Diversità.
PAST EVENT
21 November – Madrid, Spain

FEPS, together with ThinkYoung and the Felipe González Foundation presented the report ‘Builders of Progress: Europe’s NextGen’ in Madrid. The report reveals the political views of Millennials and Generation Z in 11 European countries. It is based on the most comprehensive survey on the subject, collecting 19,000 responses from young Europeans aged 16-38.

During the event, we explored the many topics covered in the report, as well as an accompanying factsheet summarising the study’s key findings on Spain.
21 November – Brussels, Belgium

Energy prices are soaring. The risk of poverty is increasing. Millions of Europeans already live in energy poverty, struggling to pay bills and live a decent life. While the Russian Federation’s horrific invasion of Ukraine has shifted the geopolitics of decarbonization, the EU’s ambitions to tackle the structural causes of energy poverty and accelerate the transition to renewable energy are under threat.

SOLIDAR, FEPS, Social Platform, and FES hosted a roundtable to ask: What can the EU do to rapidly respond to the needs of the energy crisis without sacrificing the just energy transition?
21 November – Barcelona, Spain

This public conference in Barcelona by FEPS and the Rafael Campalans Foundation analysed the Twin Transition from both a global and a local perspective.

The event was composed of two panels:
  • The first launched the Policy Study by FEPS and United Nations UniversityThe EU and North Africa: Towards a just Twin Transition?“. It took a deep dive into the EU’s green and digital policies vis-à-vis North Africa: has the EU been able to unite the two successfully? And what about Northern Africa? Is there an alignment and tangible impact that is necessary to tackle the global problem of climate change?
  • The second panel instead zoomed in on the local level: (smart) cities. The conference capitalised on the political momentum of the Smart City Expo that took place in Barcelona.
The EU and North Africa: Towards a just Twin Transition?
By Amira El-Shal, Mauro Santaniello and Reinhilde Bouckaert

The EU has developed a twin green and digital transition project that seeks to harmonize its previously autonomous policy areas. Shortly after the elaboration of the Twin Transition, an agenda for the externalisation of the process was introduced. Thus, adding a strong geopolitical dimension to an already ambitious project. Can the EU successfully unite the two transitions and reconcile its North African foreign policy ambitions with its value-driven Twin Transition?

This policy study analyses the externalisation process of the Twin Transition in the EU’s Southern neighbourhood, comparing the different approaches to the project of North African countries and the EU. This research attempts to provide recommendations that could contribute to deeper EU-North African cooperation. Read more

Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women #VaW. Gender-based violence is both the cause and result of gender inequality and represents a serious human rights violation pervasive across all member states.

FEPS and Fondation Jean-Jaurès dedicated a whole series of publications to shed light on specific dimensions of gender-based violence and to foster a debate on how to fight it. We also recently published a more specific Policy Study on ‘Political participation and #VaW in politics in Southeastern Europe’. To learn more about how to stop #GenderBasedViolence, check the FEPS web page dedicated to the topic. It is now time for a strong EU-wide response!

War in Ukraine: women facing the scourge of gender-based violence
by Marianne Mikko

As of November, the number of Ukrainian refugees in Europe amounts to 7.8 million. Add to that the number of internal refugees, and all in all, a third of the Ukrainian population has been forced to abandon their homes because of the war. Nine of every ten war refugees are women and children.

This means several lurking dangers. Violence against women can remain hidden. Women who have fled the war are in danger of falling into exceptionally brutal situations
