Political participation and violence against women in politics in southeastern Europe

by Ana Radičević

Women in Southeastern Europe (SEE) remain significantly under-represented at all levels of political decision-making. There are numerous barriers to women’s political participation in addition to a unique form of violence against women in public space, a phenomenon which is one of the major reasons women are discouraged from participating, especially in politics.

This research shows that while both men and women experience violence in politics, women are subjected to particular types of violence and intimidation that would rarely if ever, happen to men.

In this series of policy breakfast meetings, experts and policy-makers will be presenting potential policy solutions to tackle diverse aspects pertaining to employment.

Employment is a key component to combatting poverty, precarity and ensuring social inclusion in our societies. Yet across the EU, nearly 13,5 million people are unemployed, and states struggle to cope with long-term unemployment, youth unemployment, and unemployment of the low-skilled. These challenges have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and are likely to increase as the digital and green transitions.

Against that difficult backdrop, what can the EU do

PROGRESSIVE PAGE
Not discretion, but clarity is the better part of valour. Ukraine has courageously resisted the imperialist assault on its sovereignty by Russia, whose most important war aim is to reach back to Peter the Great.

Russia wants access to warm-water ports, and buffers against invasion to its West and North. Whatever the successes of Russia’s incursion into Ukraine, these aims have all been tainted in one way or another.
