Upcoming Events
All of a sudden FEPS office is too quiet and empty… Why? Because during this week, 50 promising young politicians and changemakers came to our offices for the 5th ‘Annual Autumn Academy’. We did plenty of inspiring workshops, masterclasses, debates… Together with a high-level line-up of speakers. So yes, now we miss them, but it is great to know that all around Europe, there are young progressives with great minds.

This week, we also travelled to Stockholm to launch the ‘Digital Programme’, with our Nordic partners, and organise a top-level debate on AI at the workplace.

But FEPS busy rentrée has just started. A lot more will happen in the next days and weeks. Stay tuned!
17-20 September – FEPS HQ
The fifth edition of the ‘Annual Autumn Academy’ (AAA) took place “à la rentrée” of 2023. The academy, which was launched in 2019, brought together 50 participants, chosen from among the most promising young politicians and activists from across the EU.
Over the years, we have been fortunate to have an excellent and diverse line-up of speakers, including party leaders, commissioners, ministers, members of parliaments, MEPs, academics, civil society experts, trade union representatives, journalists, pollsters, youth spokespersons and many others. Since the launch of the academy, we have involved nearly 1,000 people – who belong directly or indirectly to the ever-growing AAA family. Read more.
Arancha González Laya, co-author of the book with Yanis Bourgeois, took part in the AAA to tell us the behind-the-scenes of today’s intricate trade ecosystem. An occasion to present her book, which offers a comprehensive perspective on the importance of open trade and economic integration.

The book explores the trajectory of trade, the necessary regulatory mechanisms, and the imperative of making trade a beneficial force for all rather than just a select few. Trade will always lead to discussions, this primer will make the discussion more factual and knowledgeable.

During country-focused workshops of the AAA, we presented the findings of the upcoming Next Left Country Case Studies, a new publication series and an outcome of the work within the Next Left Research Programme geared by FEPS and Karl Renner Institut.
The series, commissioned to provide insight into the Social Democratic parties in Europe and beyond, focuses on exploring the current state of Social Democracy in selected countries. Stay tuned for more information!
27 September – FEPS HQ
More than one year and a half after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, when emotional fatigue and disengagement may start showing up, FEPS invites you to get stimulus for an informed debate about Ukraine’s future in Europe.
Join a roundtable with the editors and some of the authors of the book ‘Europe and the war in Ukraine‘, to explore the developments concerning the key aspects of the war from a European perspective. This book provides more than just an in-depth analysis. It is one of the first attempts to put the pieces of a comprehensive mosaic together.
PAST EVENT
21 September – Stockholm, Sweden
The workplace has seen a rapid introduction of digital technologies for gig work, remote work, surveillance, and algorithmic management of workers.
This public launch of the FEPS-Nordics Digital Programme on Algorithmic Management and Workers’ Rights brought together researchers, policymakers, trade unionists and other stakeholders from the Nordic countries to discuss the effects of digital tech on the nature of work itself across the labour market.

The key role of trade unions in this complex landscape was one of the many important points discussed. Check our Twitter thread to get a glimpse!
Yesterday, members of the Progressive Economics Network met in Brussels at Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) office, the EU Commission and FEPS HQ to discuss how to enhance capabilities for green investment and industrial policy.
The Network is an initiative coordinated by FEPS, FES and Das Progressive Zentrum. It is composed of policymakers and economic advisors committed to progressive politics working in governments at European or national levels and in political parties. Meeting participants had a lively and insightful exchange.

The reform of the EU fiscal rules will dominate the Brussels agenda until the end of this year. The Commission proposal is a significant improvement compared to the original framework, but is not ambitious enough in terms of enabling the green and social transition.
This new dossier proposes recommendations on how to improve the fiscal proposal:
Clear head and nerves of steel – the dilemma of reforming our fiscal rules by Miguel Costa Matos
Daring more democracy! by Dominika Biegon and Cédric Koch
