FEPS at the ‘Africa Summit of the Future Dialogue’ in Abuja, Nigeria

04/03/2024

FEPS delegation, including FEPS Special Advisor on Foreign Affairs Ann Linde, attended the ‘The Africa we want and the United Nations we need: Africa Summit of the Future Dialogue’ in Abuja, Nigeria.

In the run-up to the September 2024 Summit of the Future, which will see the adoption of the Pact of the Future, the Africa Summit of the Future Dialogue brought together African and global experts to explore strategies for enhancing Africa’s voice and participation in the United Nations system.

Today, many African countries need help to meet their development goals due to the impact of severe and mutually reinforcing socioeconomic, environmental, and political shocks. Together with partners Savannah Centre for Diplomacy, Democracy and Development, Stimson Centre, Olof Palme International Centre, Max van der Stoel Foundation, ‘Africa Summit of the Future Dialogue’ focused on the importance of African perspectives and innovation priorities in being heard in global policy debates.

Conversations focused on how global institutions, including the United Nations, and regional African institutions, such as the Africa Union, could be improved to better address the critical issues of sustainable development, peace and security, climate governance, democratic and digital participation, and human rights and humanitarian action.

Speakers included:

  • H.E. Prof. Ibrahim GAMBARI, Founding Chairman, Savannah Centre for Diplomacy, Democracy & Development and former Foreign Minister of Nigeria, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, and Co-Chair of the Commission on Global Security, Justice & Governance
  • H.E Bola Ahmed TINUBU, GCFR; President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria
  • H.E Donald KABERUKA, former President of the African Development Bank and Finance Minister of Rwanda, and Member of the Secretary-General’s High-Level Advisory Board on Effective Multilateralism
  • H.E Senator George AKUME, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Nigeria.
