The progressive EU-level think tank Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS) and its Nordic Partners have launched a Digital Research Programme to investigate the developments around artificial intelligence (AI) at the workplace and their effects on workers’ rights. The research programme started in 2023 and will be executed in Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Norway throughout 2024.

In this webinar, we presented our first findings and how the developments in the platform economy, where platform workers are confronted with algorithmic management in its purest form, are relevant for understanding what is coming to traditional sectors of the economy. Soon, a big part of the workforce will be confronted with AI in their workplaces. Getting this right and coming to a worker-centric approach to algorithmic management is a challenge.

Programme:

  • Welcome and opening by moderator Gerard Rinse Oosterwijk, digital policy analyst of
FEPS and introduction of the Digital Programme on algorithms in the workplace.
  • Kristoffer Lind Glavind, senior analyst at The Economic Council of the Labour Movement
in Denmark, presented his study on ‘Employment terms of platform workers. Data-driven
analysis of online platforms in Denmark
    ’.
  • Q&A and discussion on the development platform work in light of the recent
development around the Platform Work Directive.
  • Bonn Juego, Senior Lecturer in Development Studies at the University of Jyväskylä (JYU)
and Tereza Østbø Kuldova, Research Professor at the Work Research Institute, Oslo
Metropolitan University, on their study ‘Algorithms by and for the workers. Towards a
fair, democratic, and humane digitalisation of the workplace
    ’.
  • Q&A and discussion on the development of algorithmic management in traditional
sectors and the implications for European and national regulations and policy-making.
  • Closing remarks by the researchers.
  • Next steps and announcement of upcoming events and publications.
