The Lectures form an integral part of the Next Left Research Programme (est. 2009), and ever since they were introduced as an innovation in 2022, they are considered to be the significant moment during which the newest findings deriving from research of the top European academics are presented in closed-door exclusive sessions to the leading European policy Makers. The list of Lecturers we have had the honour to welcome in this framework includes Professor Tarik Abou-Chadi, Lord (Roger) Liddle, and Professor Daphne Halikopoulou, and in this new cycle of 2024, we have secured Professor Simon Hix and Professor Jenny Andersson already.

The Lecture by Professor Simon Hix offered some very important insights into the situation that the Progressives find themselves in ahead of the elections, as also some predictions as to what may happen after June 2024.

Just to share some details of his very rich biography, as a leading academic, Professor Hix is affiliated with the European University Institute, which he joined in 2021 – after years spent at the London School of Economics and Political Science. His research interests include comparative political behaviour and institutions – in particular, political parties and party systems, public opinion and voting behaviour, electoral system design, and legislative behaviour – as well as the study of political behaviour and institutions in the European Union. Since 2009, Prof.

Hix used to be offering one of the most attended events in pre-election Brussels, presenting every five years very accurate predictions for the upcoming vote. He has won prizes for his research from the American Political Science Association, the US-UK Fulbright Commission, and the UK Economic and Social Research Council. Simon is a Fellow of the British Academy and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. What may additionally be of interest is that in his very early years as a young academic, Professor Hix completed the first-ever publication devoted to the history of the PES.
