In memory of Barbara Prammer, the SPÖ Federal Women, the Karl-Renner-Institut, the SPÖ Parliament Club and FEPS hold an annual “Barbara Prammer Symposium” around the birthday of the former Austrian President of the National Council and women’s chairwoman.

This year the Istanbul Convention was in the focus of the symposium since it is the most far-reaching internationally legally binding instrument with which women are to be protected from gender-based violence.

If Austria was a role model in the creation of the set of rules 11 years ago with its violence protection laws, the right to accompany trials or anti-stalking measures, today it seems to be falling behind in terms of protection against violence.

The situation in other European countries is even more dramatic. Turkey has already withdrawn from the Istanbul Convention, other countries such as Poland, Slovenia and Slovakia are preparing to follow suit. Fundamentalist, authoritarian organizations are increasingly trying to undermine international law. What strategies, tasks and instruments do we need to put a stop to these backward-looking and patriarchal developments and to secure a life without violence?
